What happened
NAIA members vote on Proposal 26-B-01 at a virtual business meeting on Nov. 4, with one vote per school and conference. It would let athletes compete in five seasons while keeping the existing limit of 10 semesters (or 15 quarters) of attendance.
If it passes, it takes effect May 1, 2027, and the fifth season can first be played in 2027-28. The same proposal would end the rule that lets an athlete play a small part of a season without using it, and a fifth season would require meeting credit-hour and GPA requirements.
What it means for you
A fifth season means more experienced players staying on NAIA rosters, and some players who finished four seasons at an NCAA school may be able to play a fifth at an NAIA school. Both can leave fewer roster spots, and less scholarship money, for incoming freshmen.
For many families the NAIA is a realistic and affordable landing spot, so this matters most for the classes of 2027 and 2028.
What to do now
- 01If NAIA schools are on your list, ask coaches how many players they expect back in 2027-28 and how many freshmen they plan to sign.
- 02Check back after Nov. 4. We will update this page with the result.
