What happened
On Oct. 7 the Division I Cabinet affirmed a plan from the men's soccer oversight committee to play the season in two segments: up to 18 games in the fall (late August to the week before Thanksgiving) and up to 10 in the spring (from mid-February), inside the same 25-game yearly cap. The national championship would move to the spring.
The vote fell short of the 75% needed to pass outright, so the plan entered a 30-day override window. It takes effect in the 2027-28 academic year unless at least two-thirds of Division I members (241 or more) vote to rescind it. The exact spring championship dates have not been set.
The men's soccer transfer window would also move to after the spring championship. The women's soccer committee looked at the same idea and chose not to propose it for women's soccer.
What it means for you
If it stands, the class of 2027 would arrive as freshmen into a year-round Division I men's schedule. A college season that ends in spring, with a transfer window that opens after it, shifts when coaches know which roster spots are open, and open roster spots are what recruiting is about.
Expect Division I men's programs to need time to settle their spring calendars, and possibly their recruiting calendars. Division II, Division III, NAIA and junior college men's soccer are not part of this change.
What to do now
- 01Boys in the classes of 2027 and 2028 targeting Division I: ask each coach you talk to how a spring season would change their roster planning and when they expect to make offers.
- 02Nothing changes this fall. Keep your current plan, and check back after the override window closes in early November.
