What happened

On Oct. 7 the Division I Cabinet introduced a package of rule changes meant to let schools set more of their own recruiting rules. On official visits, a school could arrange transportation and cover lodging and entertainment for the recruit and four people traveling with them, following the school's own travel policy.

The package would also drop the cap on how many coaches count toward a staff, leaving each sport's oversight committee to limit only how many coaches can recruit off campus. The Cabinet could adopt the package as early as January. No effective date has been announced.

What it means for you

Today, many families pay their own way for parents or siblings to come along on a visit. If this passes, a Division I school would be allowed to cover up to four guests. Allowed is not required: what each school actually pays for will depend on its budget and travel policy.

Larger coaching staffs could also mean more people at a program evaluating and contacting recruits.

What to do now

  1. 01Nothing changes yet. Visits this fall and winter run under the current rules.
  2. 02When an official visit is offered after the rule is adopted, ask the program in writing exactly what it will cover and for whom, before booking anything.
